The best way to harvest leaves from a basil plant is to pinch off the top set of leaves on every stalk. That way, it will make the plant grow bushier and bigger so you'll always have fresh basil to use.

One of my favorite uses for it is to make a salad with basil leaves, tomatoes and mozzarella cheese - it's yummy!

Basil--YUM! I like throwing it into stirfries, pesto, and--my favorite--chilled strawberry basil soup.

I've got a basil plant myself and it's growing like crazy! I've got pesto plans for it, and maybe basil lemonade. As for the mint, keep it in a pot because in the ground it grows like crazy, like a weed.

Haha, Basil is pretty hearty...

The first plant I grew myself was some basil from seed. It was part of a 2nd grade girl scout badge. I still have the plant, and it's still alive... although much weaker. I still get enough leaves to use a few times a year. :) Good luck with your garden. The bruschettta chicken recipe I posted a few days back uses basil, its one of the few recipes I use basil in, but it's one of our favorites.

Well, if you got a mint plant you could make mint juleps and mojitos that could inspire more (drunken) SMB music for them both. I'm suspecting a vicious cycle here...
