For those interested in science and engineering I have two sources of information I am involved with. The Curious Cat Science and Engineering blog fellowships and scholarships posts offers some good resources and the American Society for Engineering Education Science and Engineering Scholarships Directory provides many leads.

John Hunter's last blog post..Photos of Parfrey’s Glen, Wisconsin

While all of the advice given is useful, I feel like you left out a very important part - finding scholarships. As you mentioned, it is almost useless to apply to scholarships you have no chance at getting. One example of this is the scholarships that banks offer if you simply fill out your information. Scholarships that are easy to get are generally local to your community and have specific requirements. This restricts the number of people who are eligible and greatly improves your chances of receiving the scholarship..
