Yep, tracking spending and creating a budget it the key. This is something I wish my parents would have spent some time teaching me before I headed off to college. I had to learn it all the hard way!

Great Idea. My little brother is about enter college next semester, I should have have him read this. He is not very good at keeping track of his spendings unlike me. Thanks for the tips again, hopefully he'll find useful! I know I learned a thing or two already. College Stories

Hey Stephanie:

Thanks for all your great tips on saving money! I know it’s such an important time right now for us as college students to be careful what we spend our money on. I know I’m broke! I happened to run into this contest yesterday, http://indebted.mtvu.com/the-challenge/, might help me pay off some of my bills!

Very true! I was also a big spender and when I started keeping track of everything I became much more aware and responsible financially!

Tip #2. If you don't have Excel then use Gnumeric or the spreadsheet in OpenOffice. Both are free software.

http://www.gnome.org/projects/gnumeric/
http://www.openoffice.org/

In fact, there is a whole world of free software out there, and most people don't know much about it. Ok, they often know about Firefox, but that is really just the tip of the iceberg.

And you are one of those people that infringe on software copyrights while using the excuse that you couldn't afford to buy it anyway (so the company isn't really losing money), you might even consider free software the path back to your honor.

If you've already paid for Excel, well, admittedly it is a fine program. It's not free software, but it works great. If you'd like to know more about the geek social movement that is free software, I'd probably start at: http://www.fsf.org/about/what-is-free-software

There you are, my little tip of the week. It may not be "track what you spend," but it is what it is, a small good deed done.
