We are looking for an apt. right now and this really helps..certainly a few things we didn't think of. I wanted to add a couple: 1) Visit both at night and during the day to gauge both safety and noise levels. 2) Try to imagine what the apartment will be like during the hottest and coldest parts of the year. If there's no AC, are there windows that can be left open to provide a breeze, and would you feel safe leaving those windows open while you slept? Good tips. I also agree that a camera is a must. We had people help lead us into the right apartment when we moved overseas, and their pics were invaluable. There is no insurance that things will go to plan, or that memories are infallible, so a picture speaks more than a thousand words when it comes to an apartment! I just moved last month and unfortunately had not yet read your article. Of course, I didn't bring a camera or anything to write on, so after seeing 9 apartments in one day it was pretty tough to keep them all in order in my head. I ended up not choosing any of them, and instead chose one that I had looked at on a day when I didn't look at any other places. You have some great tips here!
