Roger, I was definitely of the same frame of mind as you about the book, at the start. The name seemed totally scammy to me, and it took me upwards of a year to get around to reading it. But as I said, I’m really glad I did. It’s definitely a lesson in how extreme frugality can, at times, actually help to make you rich. Who’da thunk it?

Hanna, I saw it as a real mix of biography and how-to. The how-to is mostly fixated on frugality: how to save on food, entertainment, housing costs, etc. It’s not a “how-to get rich on real estate!” guide, because I think he recognizes that it would be too different based on your timeframe, starting capital, and geographic location. But he does get into the how-to of how to teach yourself.

I agree, I really loved the Net Worth bits at the end of chapters. I hope people enjoy my monthly net worth updates for that reason, even if mine have mostly been going down and down so far

I went over on Barnes & Noble to read the book. It was very entertaining but it almost read as a biography than a how-to book. There are some tips here and there though.
I liked how at the end of each chapter-he showed his Net Worth slowly going up and up…

Sounds like an interesting read. Personally, I tend to be more than a little wary of any promise that sounds too good to be true (A million dollars by 30? In what universe?), but I might have to make an exception for this one. Good, thoughtful analysis.

College graduate, actually. I try to use the most precise word whenever possible, even if other people find it inappropriate. I have yet to find a word that means near enough to “douchebag” to replace it. I’m happy to hear suggestions, though, if you have any!

Just wanted to say “Thank you” for this review. It’s the first personal finance book review I’ve read that has actually resulted in an addition to my Amazon Wish List. Being somewhere around the “Highly Recommended” age, I’m hoping someone will take pity on me around Christmas time I buy me it!!

Everyone’s gonna have different impressions. I was pleasantly surprised by Alan’s book in the end, so I’m glad I finally got over my first impression and sat down to read it.

And I dunno, maybe women have a different d-bag meter than guys do? Maybe that’s why you and I saw it differently? I will have to investigate this new theory of mine!
