I’m Stephanie, the writer of “Poorer Than You.” I’m 22 years old, female, American, and in college. Before starting this blog, I wracked up a bunch of credit card debt and dropped out of college because of the financial strain. When I started writing here, I had absolutely no idea what I was going to do while I pieced things back together. I immersed myself in the world of personal finance, hoping to educate myself enough to never again have to drop everything because of money. Through reading, writing, and interacting with the community, I feel that I’ve begun the steps down the right path.

In September of 2007, I returned to school to work on finishing my Bachelor’s degree. My ability to do so was directly tied to this blog and the lessons I learned while writing it - cheesy as that sounds.

I try my best to provide a mix of posts on this site - some about my own trials and tribulations with finances, and some more general articles about finance. If there’s anything you’d like to see covered on this site, or any questions you have, please do not hesitate to contact me!

Perhaps this goes without saying, but I’m not a financial adviser. In fact, even if I were, all advice should be taken with a grain of salt. I do not know the financial intricacies of your particular situation, so I cannot give complete advice, and therefore am not responsible for your actions. All actions taken based on my writings are at your own risk.

If you wish to contact me, use this super-easy form to drop me an email!

Frequently Asked Questions:

“Poorer Than You,” … where does that name come from? Are you really, really, ridiculously poor?
Wealth is relative. I didn’t consider myself very poor until I went to film school. Suddenly, once there, was I surrounded by people who came from upper-middle-class and flat-out-wealthy families, whereas I came from a rural town and blue-collar parents. When I had to leave because of financial problems, it seemed like most of the other “film kids” didn’t understand that concept - many of them asked me why my parents simply didn’t pay for my education. That question made me so angry that I started a site called “Poorer Than You,” and the rest is history.
