Welcome to the 214th Carnival of Personal Finance! Each week the carnival travels around the blogosphere, rounding up the best personal finance posts. This week’s theme is POTUS – the Presidents of the United States!

Now I’m not the biggest history nerd you’ll ever meet, but I do have a soft-spot for things that are presidential (just ask my brain’s vast knowledge of every single episode of The West Wing). To get yourself into the mood of this carnival, go ahead and listen to Jonathan Coulton’s song “The Presidents” (some slight language, lyrics can be found here) and then dive right in!

Watch out for my picks for Editor’s Choice, which can be found in bold!

George Washington, 1789-1797

Washington could not tell a lie, and Simon has a list of 8 Things That Do Not Affect Your Credit Score. (Sure, those don’t line up perfectly… but I didn’t want to get your hopes up that any of these were going to!)

John Adams, 1797-1801

The first president to go to college in the United States! (Harvard, class of 1755.) Studenomist is also a fan of college: he shows his love and the financial benefits of education in I Love College – 4 Financial Benefits of Being a College Student.

Thomas Jefferson, 1801-1809

TJ (as I like to call him) bought a big chunk of land with the Louisiana Purchase. Maybe he should have put that bad boy on a credit card and wracked up some rewards points! (What reward would you get with all those points – California?) Maybe Jim Wang can tell us, as he explores the 8 Reasons Credit Cards Beat Debit Cards.

James Madison, 1809-1817

If you’re a fan of how James Madison kicked the Brits out of the US in the War of 1812, you’ll love how Chris is kicking debt in How to Pay Off Debt: 3 Methods Examined.

James Monroe, 1817-1825

The Monroe Doctrine pretty much told Europe to keep their paws off of America. You can tell financial institutions to keep their paws off your money if you take some tips from Matthew Paulson in Fighting Increased Fees in Your Finances.

It’s hard enough trying to fill the Presidential shoes of your father, but it’s especially hard when your father was known as an all-around frugal guy who had his act together. If he didn’t quite learn it from dear old Dad, maybe RC can help John Q. out with Basic Money Management – Creating and Living on a Budget.

Tyler got Texas, but not a second term. What are you missing? The Weakonomist can tell you about the Four Features Missing From Your Retirement Accounts.

James Knox Polk, 1845-1849

Polk was responsible for the second-largest expansion of the nation’s territory. Before you go and start trying to expand your territory, take some tips from FMF about The Cost of a New Home.

Zachary Taylor, 1849-1850

Hey Taylor, you were born in Virginia! What do you think about this new program where Virginia Offers Small Loans to State Employees that Sun told me about?

Millard Fillmore, 1850-1853

Fillmore had a bit of a knack for dying parties. He served on the New York State Assembly on the Anti-Masonic ticket, and later he was the last Whig President. It just shows that you can’t always count on your political party to be there as you get older. Michael B. Rubin has Five Reasons Not to Count on An Inheritance in Your Retirement Plan, as well. Well, what can you count on these days?

Franklin Pierce, 1853-1857

Poor guy often finds a place on lists of America’s Worst Presidents. Hey, at least he didn’t steal a cart full of stuff from Wal-Mart, or rip off a bunch of people in my city like the people in this article by Jeremy Simon: Scammers speak about identity theft.

James Buchanan, 1857-1861

He thought secession from the union was illegal, but he also thought going to war to stop states from seceding was illegal. Sometimes, you’ve just got to do things the way you see fit, I guess. Brad Chaffee explains that well in Baby Emergency Fund – Do It Your Way!

Abraham Lincoln, 1861-1865

We can thank Lincoln for a lot of things, including income taxes! Yes, the nation’s first income tax was levied on his watch, in 1862. Well, you win some, you lose some (and then you take in a play). Since we’ve still got to deal with income taxes, Kevin can show you How to Prepare Your Finances for Higher Taxes.

Andrew Johnson, 1865-1869

You get what you pay for, America! Andrew Johnson barely survived impeachment, a lesson for the future that we (sort of) learned. Protect yourself from bad products and services by remembering Why the Lowest Price is For Losers, by MoneyNing.

Ulysses Simpson Grant, 1869-1877

General Grant was a war hero in the Civil War, but he sort of jumped the shark as President Grant. What do you do When Personal Finance Jumps the Shark? Modern Gal can help you out there!

Rutherford Birchard Hayes, 1877-1881

Hayes ended US Reconstruction – you can prevent trouble like that by knowing what you’re getting into when you go to refinance your house. In fact, you can really avoid trouble if you learn before you even buy a house! Take it from Dave: Refinancing: What You Need to Know (Even Before You Own)

James Abram Garfield, 1881

This guy lived for two months after being shot in an assassination attempt. What would you do if you were injured, but not killed? Would you have enough insurance to cover everything? Henry Stern gives an intro to critical insurance in Critically Speaking.

Is it sad that the reason I know he’s the 21st President is because of the movie Die Hard 3? Oh well! Hey, you know who is bad-ass like John McClane? Warren Buffet. Alexg shows us a video where Warren Buffet Gives Advice To Girl Scouts (while eating a Blizzard).

It just wasn’t meant to be with Benjamin Harrison – one term and then the country elected Grover Cleveland again. It’s the same thing for J. Money: he ditched his savings bonds and put the money in his trusty Roth IRA. Read about it at Bye Bye Bonds, Hello Roth IRAs.

For Grover Cleveland’s second term, we’ll throw in a repeater for another president. This should go under Obama, but I’ve got more than one thing for our current Commander-in-Chief.
McKinley signed the Gold Standard Act in 1900, ending the practice of exchanging silver for gold in US currency. How far we’ve come! James has been living entirely without cash for over a year now, and he’ll show you how to do it in his video, the Do’s and Don’ts of Living Without Cash.

Teddy was a hunter, but he was also known for having a great respect for those in the animal kingdom. I have to wonder if he would have shot some of the animals that vh describes in Other People’s Pets!

On a barely-related note, LGBT couples who have one partner stay home with a child might consider doing a Roth conversation when income is low.

Next week, Poorer Than You will being hosting the Carnival of Personal Finance! Submissions for the 214th edition are open until 5:00pm EDT on Sunday, July 19th. I’ve already picked a theme for this edition – U.S. Presidents! Yes, I know, not all PF blogs are written by people from the States, but you’ll get a better idea of what I have in mind when you see the carnival itself, next week.

Planning to submit? You can help me out, and your blog at the same time, by doing the following: when you fill out the “remarks” section of your submission form, include a comment about which U.S. President you think your post embodies. Is it something Thomas Jefferson would approve of? Does it remind you of Harding’s laissez faire business attitude? Are you taking a second shot at something like Grover Cleveland? Let me know when you submit your entry!

Before we get to ahead of ourselves thinking about next week’s carnival, let’s take a moment to celebrate this week’s! Baker over at Man vs. Debt did a wonderful job of hosting the 213th Carnival of Personal Finance, even though he’s recently moved to New Zealand and is still trying to get settled! As such, the carnival carries a New Zealand theme, and I learned many fun facts about one of the most majestic countries on this planet.

Kelly Oakin’s guest post here on Poorer Than You, Erasing Negative Credit History: 5 Strategies You May Not Have Heard About was included in the New Zealand edition of the carnival. There were many other fantastic submissions – here are a few that I thought you guys might enjoy:

How to Guess a Social Security Number and Get Famous on the Internet – you may have heard some recent news about a study released, showing that Social Security numbers are too easy to guess. Frank at Bad Money Advice digs into this study, and the news surrounding it, to find the real truth about the study.

Getting the Best Car Insurance Rates – if you’re moving out on your own, like me, it might be time to start shopping around for your own car insurance. Wojciech at Fiscal Fizzle has your back, and can help you shop around for the best rates.

The Average Cost of Groceries Per Person: Best Guesses – trying to figure out how much groceries will cost you during your first year on your own, but you’re just not sure how much it will be? Maybe this article from Personal Finance Analyst can help.

Credit Scores Matter More Than You Think – your credit score isn’t just used to determine whether or not you should get a loan! Jim Wang’s guest post on Free From Broke shows you how your credit score could determine whether you get a job, an apartment, a cell phone, and even to determine your rates for insurance!

Has Our Costco Membership Been Worth It? – wondering if a warehouse club membership really saves money? Let Laura from Green Panda Treehouse walk you through her savings.

Don’t forget to tune in next week for the U.S. President’s edition of the carnival!

But now we’re entering the final stages of it, and PTY will look very, very different, very soon. I hope you like it when it finally happens! But for now, I’m dog-tired. Probably because I take on too many different things at once. In addition to finishing the site redesign, I’m also looking for “real job,” and I started another website. But we’ll talk about that last part later.

For now, here are the blog carnivals that PTY participated in last week:

168th Festival of Frugality at Funny About Money
Carnival of Personal Finance #195 at StockTradingToGo.com

Check them out! Blog carnivals are a great place to find fresh and awesome articles on a variety of subjects.

Blargh – I’m sick! I babysat for my sick niece and nephew last week, so I am fairly sure I picked up a bug from one of them. I’m nowhere near as ill as they were – I don’t have a fever or anything, just a three-day-long sinus headache. Or maybe it’s due to the fact that the weather has rapidly turned warm and humid – it’s 50 degrees (F) out at the moment.

I’m going to make myself some soup! In the meantime, why don’t you check out the blog carnivals that PTY has participated in this last week:

The 190th Carnival of Personal Finance: Buddy, Can You Spare a Dime? over at Funny About Money featured my article Is It OK to Bridge the Gap With Credit Cards? Interestingly enough, MSN’s SmartSpending blog also linked and commented on that article, in Should her credit card be her backup plan?

The Carnival of Twenty Something Finances over at Debt Reduction Formula chose my post I Will Not Be Able to Afford My Student Loans as an Editor’s Pick. Bah, those loans make my head hurt more, just thinking about them!

Take it easy everyone – enjoy the nice weather if you’ve got it!

Aside from hosting the Carnival of Twenty Something Finances, I participated in a couple more carnivals last week:

The Finance Fiesta No. 3: The Spanish Money Proverbs Edition
and
The Carnival of Personal Finance #157: Third Anniversary Edition

Also this past week, Jim over at Blueprint for Financial Prosperity alerted me that Poorer Than You was mentioned in Dan Ariely’s book Predictably Irrational.

So I did the completely rational thing and told my parents about it, who immediately ran out to buy a copy of the book. I’ve been interested in reading the book since it came out, but since the last borrower never returned it to the library, I never had the chance to have the “OMG MY WEBSITE IS MENTIONED IN THIS BOOK” moment while reading it.

I’m not sure whether I feel that it was a “good” mention or a “bad” one. Ariely says, of this site and other debt bloggers:

Blogging about overspending is important and useful, but … what we truly need is a method to curb our consumption at the moment of temptation, rather than a way to complain about it after the fact.

I’m not sure I’d ever classify my blog as a “complaint” about my debt, although I can see how some debt blogs do fall into that category. In point of fact, I believe a blog can act as a way to curb consumption – mine has kept me accountable and focused on personal finance, which has done wonders for my situation.

Still… SWEET!

Hello, and welcome to the Carnival of Twenty Something Finances for June 16th, 2008! I’m Stephanie, and I’ll be your host as we highlight articles and posts from around the web-o-sphere that pertain to money matters for Generation Y.

And I have to tell you, this opportunity to act as host has sent me on a POWER TRIP!

That’s right, I’m hijacking the power given to me as the Editor of the carnival, and using it to rank the submissions sent in to me. Normally, you don’t see this level of competition and favoritism in a blog carnival. But I feel that by ranking the posts and weeding them out to the good, better, and best, I’m doing a service both to the writers of the articles, and to the readers of the carnival. So let’s GO!

WINNERS! (Editor’s Picks)

This week, my post about making smart choices while buying my new cell phone was accepted into the Carnival of Personal Finance at Money and Values. The first post in my Graduating? series about job hunting was accepted into the Festival of Twenty Something Finances at My Beauty and Fashion.

Some posts from the carnivals that I really enjoyed:

Updating the college scholarship resume – This not only makes it easier for you to apply for scholarships, it forces you to think about what you’re doing (or not doing!) in school and how that will look to scholarship committees.

Student loans are not “good debt” and Are college degrees overrated?
These two posts echo my thoughts that a lot of people go to college for entirely the wrong reasons. I’m still not entirely sure whether or not I should be counted in that category! I think the over-valuing of the Bachelors degree in America has led to too many people getting them, which in turn causes too many employers “requiring” them for jobs that don’t actually need a four year degree.

Why? – Sarah at 20Saver beautifully answers the question that I get a lot too. When people try to argue I should spend money because I’m “only young once,” my response is “Yes. That’s exactly why I’m trying to save now.”

Before I get into the carnival and point out my favorites, I’d like to issue an apology. RSS feed subscribers were subjected to some wonkiness the last couple of days – not limited to duplicate items and truncated articles. I apologize – the feed was the injured party in my server move. I hope no one unsubscribed because they thought I have moved to partial feeds – it was just a glitch! This article and all future articles should publish the full article! And now, on to my carnival highlights!

This edition of the Carnival of Personal Finance was hosted by the Frugal Law Student and is the BEST WEEK EVER Edition (one of my favorite shows – it will probably be one of the only ones I start watching when I return home and have cable!). My College Freshman Checklist was included. Here are the other articles that I thoroughly enjoyed:

The Dough Roller shares 10 Things I Now Know at 40 That I Wish I Knew at 20 – maybe some of us that are 20 can take this advice and run with it!

Plonkee Money gives a lesson in British Money Slang – something that interests the linguist in me quite a bit! (That’s why I took Latin in high school instead of an modernly useful language.)

Millionaire Mommy let loose the secret of How I Became a Millionaire While Working In My Pajamas - what I like about her story is that there really is no secret to it!

Saving Advice did a wonderful photo essay of 25 Money Confessions.

Thanks again to the Frugal Law Student for hosting the carnival this week!
