I Just Won a Movie Ticket From Blingo

Filed under: Free Services I Love, Sweepstakes — by Stephanie on March 23, 2007 @ 7:08 pm

Huzzah! I signed up for Blingo almost two months ago, and finally, I won something! Actually, I didn’t win… but I did. Cause with Blingo, if anyone you referred wins a prize, you win that prize as well. And one of my referrals won a Fandango ticket today, so I won one too! He immediately IMed me, and as soon as we get them in the mail, the two of us are going to the movies. At the nice theater. FOR FREE.

I <3 Blingo!

Join Upromise and Get $2 in Your Account

Filed under: College, Free Services I Love, Savings — by Stephanie on February 27, 2007 @ 9:03 pm

Being an affliate doesn’t just help me - it helps you guys! I just got an email from Upromise telling me that if any of you join Upromise (using that link) and add a credit or debit card to your account (these cards will never be charged), Upromise will deposit $2 into your new Upromise account. There was no word on how long this promotion will last, so you might want to snatch it up now!

I have already sung the praises of Upromise, but if that didn’t convince you, maybe two free dollars will!

Free iPod Shuffle from WOWIO

Filed under: Free Services I Love, Sweepstakes — by Stephanie on February 26, 2007 @ 2:55 pm

Yes, I love WOWIO even more now. My free iPod shuffle, which I got for referring 10 people to WOWIO, came today. Isn’t it lovely?

Gift Wrapped!
So Pretty!
And free, too!
Want your own completely free iPod shuffle (that’s right, I didn’t pay shipping or anything)? The promotion is still going on. Check out WOWIO, and sign up. At the end of the registration process, when it asks who referred you, put

vanpattenjames@gmail.com

This is my friend’s email address, and will help him get his iPod shuffle. Why should you bother to credit my friend, you ask? Well, because it will give you good referral karma, which will help you get YOUR ten referrals! So once you’ve signed up, convince ten of your friends that WOWIO is a truly awesome service, and have them sign up, crediting your email address.

It’s very, very easy (I managed to convince 10 people in two days), and WOWIO truly is a great service.

Also, if you sign up under the email address above, feel free to send me an email using my contact form. Once my friend has his 10 referrals, replace his email address on this page with the first person who emailed me, and once they get their ten, I’ll put up the next email address, and so forth. This page, as of June 2007, still gets several hits from search engines every day!

(Number of people I’ve referred who have also gotten their own iPod shuffle: 4)

Pear Budget - Really Friggin Easy Budgeting

Filed under: Free Services I Love — by Stephanie on February 21, 2007 @ 9:41 pm

After reading on My Money Blog about how easy (and free!) Pear Budget is, I downloaded it and gave it a look-over. I was impressed - because it runs in Excel, the document size is practically nothing. It’s well thought-out, and easy to use. Unfortunately, I could also tell it wasn’t for me. I have two monthly expenses right now: my car and my credit card payment. Besides that, all I really buy is gas for my car. I keep track of all my money’s comings and goings in a Excel document that I wrote myself, and although I was in love with Pear Budget, I knew our time had not come yet.

But that doesn’t mean I didn’t find someone else to thrust it upon! While I was in LA, I set it up for The Fella. I uploaded it into Google Docs and Spreadsheets, because The Fella works from two different computers, and I wanted him to be able to access it from either. Some of the features (such as the red triangles) don’t work in Google Docs, and some of it looks a little funny, but all of the basics of the program still work.

The reason Pear Budget is good for The Fella and not for me is that he has actual expenses and income, living on his own and having real jobs and the sort. Basically, this program might not be useful for anyone college-aged or younger, but once you’re living on your own, I highly recommend it. It’s free, it’s super easy, and because of Google Docs, you can decide whether you want it to be online or offline.

I like it!

Upromise - Easy College Savings

Filed under: College, Free Services I Love, Savings — by Stephanie on February 18, 2007 @ 5:34 pm

Upromise is another one of those companies that I simply adore. It’s a free service that helps you save money for college. If you’re not familar with the program, it goes a little something like this: you register your credit, debit, and grocery savings cards with them, and when you make qualified purchases (in the supermarket, you’ll sometimes notice some price tags have the Upromise logo on them), Upromise tracks the purchase and puts a small amount of money into your Upromise account. The money earned in the account can be put towards student loans, or deposited in a 529 account.

It’s a very small amount of money indeed - but it adds up over time. My mom signed up for Upromise, for me, when the service was very new - around the time I was 12 years old or so. She registered her cards, and then we forgot about it for 8 years. During that time, her credit and debit cards expired and changed, so the service was no longer receiving any information from those cards. However, her grocery card stayed the same, so for 8 years, it registered all of her qualified supermarket purchases.

A few months ago, we suddenly remembered the account and logged in. Sitting pretty in the account was about $42. Sure, that’s only the cost of about a textbook. But remember, that’s just the grocery card. If we’d actually kept all of her information up to date, and if we had actively encouraged friends and family to sign up, the amount would have been much, much greater. Yep - you can invite anyone you like to set up a Upromise account to benefit the person you’ve set it up for! I even have some of my own friends contributing to my Upromise account (I love you guys!).

I strongly encourage anyone who is planning to go to college, goes to college now, or knows someone who they’d like to help go to college someday (the further off the better - we’ve set up an account to benefit my two-year-old niece!) to sign up for this service. It’s completely free - in 8 years, we’ve never been charged for anything. There is a fair amount of email in the first month - Upromise will send a series of emails, reminding you of all the different ways to earn they offer (sign up your current credit cards, get their credit card, sign up your grocery card, shop online through them, etc. - one email per service) to get the most out of their program. After one month, those “rookie” emails stop, and it’s up to you to remember to update your cards!

So here’s the link one more time.
If you want to learn more about it directly from them, then follow the link and click “Upromise Rewards” or “Family & Friends” at the top. “Upromise College Savings Plan,” the middle link, is their 529 plan, which actually requires you to contribute money. I don’t know much about 529 plans, so I can’t say anything about that particular service, except not to get it confused with “Upromise Rewards,” which is what I have been talking about this whole post!

The usual disclaimer: Yes, the links in this post are affiliate links, and I stand to profit if you sign up. But, as usual, this is a service I would recommend regardless. You may have noticed that all of my affiliates are programs I recommend based on my own experience. That’s the way I think ads should be!

WOWIO Update

Filed under: Free Services I Love — by Stephanie on February 17, 2007 @ 3:43 pm

If it’s possible, I love WOWIO more now than I even did before. As I mentioned in my previous entry, WOWIO is a free service for downloading free ebooks, and they are doing a giveaway where if you refer 10 people to the service, you get a free iPod shuffle.

Within five days of receiving an email from WOWIO about the promotion (I’ve had an account with them since September), I had my 10 referrals and I filled out the simple form (just my address and daytime phone number) to claim my iPod shuffle.

During that time, I had a slight bit of trouble with one of my referrals crediting. He did everything right, but it simply didn’t show up. So I emailed WOWIO, and they responded in less than 20 minutes with “No problem. Just tell us his email address, and we’ll credit you.”

WOWIO is by far one of my favorite online services now! If you decide to sign up, please put

vanpattenjames@gmail.com

as your referrer, so that my friend will get credit toward his free iPod shuffle. This goes whether you sign up for the free ebooks or for your chance at the shuffle - either way, you have to sign up, and it won’t help you any to NOT put him as your referral, but it will help him if you DO.

Favorite Free Ebooks: WOWIO

Filed under: Free Services I Love — by Stephanie on February 12, 2007 @ 4:12 pm

In the spirit of saving money, I often chase “free” offers up and down the coastlines. My friends refer to this as “cheap,” but I like to think of it as “nyah-nyah-nyah-nyah, I got a free t-shirt and you didn’t!” Mostly, free stuff isn’t worth the battle, though. But sometimes, you find a gem.

WOWIO is my favorite free service. I originally signed up because they were running a scholarship sweepstakes, and free money on top of free ebooks sounded, really, really awesome.

I didn’t win the scholarship, but I did win a free t-shirt, and got more free ebooks than I’ve been able to read.

A lot of the books they started the service with are in the public domain, but they’ve been adding more and more books, including some sweet comic books. My favorite book that I’ve downloaded from them so far is “Hello,” Lied the Agent, and Other Bullshit You Hear as a Hollywood TV Writer. (Amazon link, obviously you can get it for free from WOWIO.)

What’s the catch, you ask? A very small one - the ebooks have ads in them. Full-page magazine-style ads, about 6 per ebook. For long books, that about one every 100 pages. Also, you can only download up to 5 books per day. Yeah… PER DAY.

I could rave all day about how much I love the service, but you’re best off just going to their website and checking it out for yourself. In order to sign up, though, you’ll need either a “non-anonymous email address” (a university email works well), or a credit card number (they don’t charge it, they just verify your identity). This is to keep out riff-raff that would download the books just to redistribute them.

Use Blingo and Win!

Filed under: Free Services I Love, Sweepstakes — by Stephanie on February 1, 2007 @ 3:46 pm

Thanks to 1mil, I found this great thing called Blingo, run by Publisher’s Clearing House. It’s basically just the Google search bar, only when you use it, you have a chance to win some pretty excellent prizes, from Fandango tickets up to $20,000 cash. It even has several plugins to integrate it into your browser - I already use the Quick Search box in Firefox, so it was easy to put Blingo in there and use it just like Google.

So let’s look at this: it works exactly like Google, has the ease of Google, but you can win stuff!

Also, if you can convince your friends to join, it gets even better. If one of your friends wins a prize, you win that prize too! Wouldn’t it be cool if we both won the big money? Heck, I’d be happy if we both won Fandango tickets!

Give it a try:

My Net Worth

Filed under: Free Services I Love — by Stephanie on January 31, 2007 @ 10:04 am

I’m kind of excited - now that January is over, I have the data from two months for NetworthIQ, and I can finally post my badge! When I only had data for December, it looked like I went from a net worth of $0 to -$25,000 in just one month! Now the badge is correct, and I even gained money (or, more appropriately, knocked off more debt than money spent)! I’m so proud:

My NetWorthIQ

The badge itself is sitting over in the sidebar, enjoying his place on honor. Hopefully, he will stay “of honor” and not become a mark of shame!

On a more personal note: looks like I won’t be headed to financial crisis anytime soon. But I will be headed to sunny California for two weeks, leaving Friday! However, there shouldn’t be a break in entries - I’ll have internet access and time aplenty for posting.

Free Books! Why Didn’t I Think of This Before?

Filed under: Free Services I Love — by Stephanie on January 17, 2007 @ 10:45 pm

Finally got out of the house today. I’ve been shut in the past few days, thanks to the holiday and the very beautiful ice storm (this picture of my ice laden yard was taken this morning). Besides finally getting to the bank to deposit my rolled coins, my main objective was to hit up the local library.

I haven’t had a library card since I was about 10 or so. I don’t really know why - I lived within walking distance of the library for several years, and I always like to credit myself with having enough sense to know that free books = awesome! However, I just never really got around to going there after the fourth grade.

So today I sucked it up, walked in, got a new library card, and checked out some books. Hurray, free books! I knew if I picked up too many, I wouldn’t read them all, so I limited myself to one personal finance book (The Money Book for the Young, Fabulous & Broke by Suze Orman) and one fiction (Monstrous Regiment by Terry Pratchett). I’ve never read anything by either author, so I’ll have to let you know what I think!

Also, remind me to stop adding movies to my mother’s Netflix queue, and to start checking the library. Free movies on top of free books! Inconceivable!
