Whether you’re saving for a new car, to buy a house, to start a business, to become debt free, for retirement, or for anything else, you could almost certainly use a little more cash toward your savings goal.
America Saves Week is a national effort to set a savings goal, make a savings plan, and save automatically. Join me and the millions of others who are taking time this week to start or grow our savings.
It all starts when you make a commitment to yourself to save. I’m a big fan of making a public commitment to save, because it’s one of the little steps that made a big difference early on in my savings journey. I pledged to pay off my credit card debt, and when I was done with that, I pledged to work on some savings goals. I could only commit to saving a mere $5/month toward retirement. But in less than 10 years since I first made that pledge, my retirement savings have swelled to over $90,000! It all grew from that little $5 seed and the savings habit that I made.
Let America Saves help! Take the first step today and take the America Saves pledge to save money, reduce debt, and build wealth over time. America Saves will keep you motivated with information, tips, and reminders to help you reach your savings goal. Think of them as your own personal support system.

The power of small habits that turn into big rewards. I do regret not saving the random $5 as early as I could. You’ll never miss the $5 bill at the time but you’ll sure miss the big savings account down the line.
Stephanie says
So true, Angela! I’ve always been so grateful for every dollar I saved. I can’t say the same about every dollar I spent! Especially those few times when things went really sideways (like when I was laid off, or had an expensive pregnancy) – it was so, so happy that my previous self had saved a little money so that in-hot-water self had a cash cushion.
Revanche @ A Gai Shan Life says
I’ve got a LOT of irons in the fire this year and I think they were stretch goals in the first place so it’s highly likely we won’t meet all of them. But that’s ok, I’ve got to start somewhere. My saving to spend account is set up to deposit 1/26 of our total expected irregular expenses (property taxes, car insurance, home insurance, etc) every paycheck and then we’re looking to pay down our mortgage while also investing as much as possible in our pre and post taxable investment accounts. Whew.
Stephanie says
Hey Revanche… first of all, CONGRATS because yours was the 5000th comment on Poorer Than You! (Well, the 5000th legit comment, anyway. You know how that is.) Woowoo!
And back to our regularly scheduled commenting…
I totally feel you about having lots of irons in the fire. We’ve also got a monthly automatic irregular expenses transfer going (I called it “Occasionals”) plus we’ve got… New Car, Other People’s Weddings and Baby Showers, Travel, Car Maintenance, Gifts, New Computers/Cell Phones, Charity, and of course, the general Retirement/Financial Independence tax advantaged funds. And if we ever get all of that maxed out, then it’s on to paying extra to my student loans. Whew is right! It seems like a lot when I type it all out.
For me it has been helpful to “snowball” these different savings so that I always know which goal is on top and gets any extra thrown at it.
