Bash.org, if you’re not familiar with it, is one of those sites that’s “not for anyone under 18… or over 18, for that matter.” It’s a collection of user-submitted quotes from IRC, ranging from “purely stupid” to “stupendously hilarious.” I didn’t expect to find anything personal finance related there, but sometimes even sites like Bash can surprise you.
culturejammer: you know what pennies are AWESOME for?
culturejammer: throwing at cats
culturejammer: it only costs a single penny
culturejammer: and they’ll either chase it, or get hit by it and look pissed off
culturejammer: i now use that system to value prices of things
culturejammer: for example, a thirty dollar game has to be at least as awesome as three thousand catpennies
I can’t really recommend you throw pennies at cats (although, my brother does it, and it’s pretty friggin funny), but I do recommend you pause and think about money as it passes out of your hand, and whether or not the value of your purchases matches the amount you’re paying for them.
Sigh. And she loves bash.org, too. If only I weren’t married… ๐
Hey, let’s petition the government to make catpennies our official currency. Inflation will be a thing of the past unless throwing pennies at cats suddenly becomes much more entertaining.
Nick,
Wouldn’t inflation occur as throwing pennies at cats got LESS entertaining (each catpenny is worth less)? Thus inflation would happen as people got bored with it. But that would never happen!
Speaking of pennies, my roommate has a phobia of tails-up coins. so for entertainment I can cash in a dollar and lay down 100 pennies tails up, and watch as he can’t get out of the room, or I can put them anywhere else I please and watch as he flips out. It’s quite the value system.
Ever since I’ve seen this quote years ago I’ve been using something similar to evaluate the value of microtransactions in video games. It really helps to highlight the crazy asking price of some of those microtransactions. It’s been incredibly useful.
